Understanding rhythms are an important part of becoming a bellydance artist. In this class, several common rhythms in Egyptian music will be broken down and explained. Though there are hundreds of khaleegi rhythms, the most common one for bellydancers is a 2/4 groovy syncopated rhythm. Learn all about the steps, gestures, and how to play the character of the “khaleegi girl”; how to let your hair down and dance with a Thobe. Moving beyond stationary shimmies, this specialty class is all about variation and how to use shimmies to embellish other bellydance moves. About the Traditional Arabic Music Ensemble Created in 1973 by George Sawa and the late Ebrahim Eleish, this chamber ensemble performs traditional Arabic music repertoire including the instrumental sama'i, bashraf (peshrev), longa, tahmila, taqsim, folk and classical dances; as well as the vocal Andalusian muwashshah, qad halabi, and folk and popular songs of Egypt and Syria. Dec 20 Middle Eastern Music for New Belly Dancers with Nada Nov 8 Turkish ROM with Maha Learn the music and dance form of the Roma people in Turkey also commonly referred to as "Gypsies". Roma music uses 9/8 rhythm which has its own unique feeling and dance steps. Turkish ROM is an earthy, powerful, and captivating dance form guaranteed to make you want to book a flight to Istanbul for more! Students will be given a brief introduction to Roma culture and handouts in the class. This class is from 2 pm to 4 pm.

Oct 18 Graceful Arms and Smooth Transitions with Zahira We will focus on how to create energy, strength and expressiveness with our arms and hands in a way that looks effortless, natural and interesting. We will explore the connections between arms, head, breath, expressiveness and technique to go beyond drills and combinations to true dance artistry. Finally we will bring this together to create smooth transitions from one step/move to another in a way that makes transitions an expressive and fun part of the dance that has all the potential of bringing up your own dancer -personality. AZIZA of Montreal / Portland is one of the leading belly dance instructors and performers in the world. Students rave about her motivational workshops, insightful feedback, and fantastic choreography. One day public workshop in Toronto- isolation and shimmy technique & drum solo choreography. Sunday August 5th @ Estonian House, 958 Broadview Avenue. The workshop will run from 11am - 4pm (with 1 hour for lunch). Please bring lunch.
